Every NuWho first episodes ranked..?

2019.11.02 19:35 unicorn_ho Every NuWho first episodes ranked..?

This is just my personal opinion, so feel free to tell me yours.
  1. The Eleventh Hour: fun, whimsical and magical. Everything about it screamed disaster: new show runner, new everything, 26-year-old Doctor. But it worked! Matt Smith knocked it outta the park and I’m forever grateful that it exists.
  2. Rose: one cannot ask for a better reboot of the show. It captured the essence of Doctor Who and the Doctor himself brilliantly. Kinda made me wish for more Eccleston.
  3. The Impossible Astronaut/Day of The Moon: TIA did a great job at set up the stakes and the mysteries, the Silence were terrifying, the cliff hanger was pretty darn good. DOTM sadly isn’t quite as great, but it offered good story and more mysteries to be solved. As a whole they were a joy to watch.
  4. Smith and Jones: it’s a bit underrated imo. The Judoon were amazingly built, Agyeman acting was great and her character were developed pretty throughly and Tennant was superb as always.
  5. Pilot: villain twist was a bit weak, but Mackie’s Bill was a fresh wind for the show and she was delightful. I quite like Nardole too tbh, together they saved a story would be boring otherwise.
  6. Partners in Crime: was it a great story? No. Bit stupid if you ask me. However Tennant and Tate had such good chemistry I couldn’t careless for the story. I was laughing so much I’d give the lack of menace a pass.
  7. The Magician’s Apprentice/The Witch’s Familiar: bit bleak, Coleman’s acting was kinda cardboard-y in this one but Missy was so fun and the return of Davros was enough to make it a good one.
  8. Deep Breath: plot wise, not much, quite forgettable even. Capaldi basically one handedly saved the entire thing just by his brilliant acting. He did a really good job at setting up a grumpy old Doctor we all know and love with hints of his inner darkness for his very first episode.
  9. Asylum of the Daleks: it seemed to had great ambitions but didn’t really reached its full potential. The Amy and Rory plot was a tad pointless. Still, Jenna Coleman’s debut was good and definitely better than “actual Clara” imo.
  10. The Woman Who Fell to Earth: definitely had some good bits in it, quite charming at some points. But it somehow did a better job at setting up the side characters than the Doctor herself as she felt like she didn’t exactly have a trait that defines her from the previous doctors (especially 10th and 11th). Tzim-Sha was nice though, I found his tooth face quite horrifying. But it is definitely the weakest post-generation episode as it left me still questioning: who is this doctor?
  11. New Earth: it was not bad by any mean, still a rather fun and colorful one. It’s just not very strong both plot wise and villain wise, certainly not something you’d come back to rewatch multiple times.

2018.10.30 03:55 Last_Dragon89 Dark Universe Reboot Pt. 4

Dark Universe Reboot Pt. 4
\*Finally we get to the first of the "Big Two"--FRANKENSTEIN (in all caps!!!) This one was a lot more difficult due to how iconic it is, but I managed to somehow put this together the only way I knew how. This is a combination of both the original novel and Dean Koontz's Frankenstein series of novels in terms of ideas being borrowed. This will be the simpler story, since it follows the same basic plot beats as the original novel but with a twist. Certain actors are meant to have German/Swiss-German accents without sounding exaggerated, and you'll notice some native European actors. This is meant to maintain authenticity to the setting and novel. Have fun reading and give me your thoughts!\*

The film opens with this quote by Mary Shelly herself: \"Nothing contributes so much to tranquilize the mind as a steady purpose - a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye.\"
The idea of "purpose" and meaning in living, along with the original novel's themes, are the center here. Here we go...

"I remember when I was born. It was the worst day of my life" says the words of a whispery, but harsh voice in the background as the screen is totally black. "My name is Adam" the voice then adds in. The opening credits depict the Renaissance-era painting of "Prometheus" being gradually put together as the film begins.

Victor Frankenstein is played by German actor Daniel Bruhl (from the Alienist, and also known as "Zemo" from Captain America: Civil War)
Victor Frankenstein
Born in Naples, Italy, into a wealthy Genevan family and raised in Geneva, Switzerland, Victor and his brothers, Ernest and William, all three being sons of Alphonse Frankenstein by the former Caroline Beaufort, are encouraged to seek a greater understanding of the world through chemistry. As a young boy, Victor is obsessed with studying outdated theories that focus on simulating natural wonders. When Victor is five years old, his parents adopt Elizabeth Lavenza, the orphaned daughter of an expropriated Italian nobleman, with whom Victor later falls in love.

Elizabeth is played by Dianne Kruger
Elizabeth Lavenza
During this period, Victor's parents, Alphonse and Caroline, take in yet another orphan, Justine Moritz, who becomes William's nanny. Weeks before he leaves for the University of Ingolstadt in Germany, his mother dies of scarlet fever; Victor buries himself in his experiments to deal with the grief, vowing to conquer death through science. At the university, he excels at chemistry and other sciences. It is here he befriends aspiring physician Henry Clerval, played by Rupert Friend
Henry Clerval
Eventually, he and his friend Henry Clerval meet Shmael Augustus Waldman, a professor whose notes contain information on how to create life; Waldman is played by the great Christoph Waltz
Waldman warns Victor not to use them lest he create an "abomination" at first, but later indoctrinates Victor into a world of darkness...Waldman teaches Victor all sorts of twisted methods. Victor becomes his 'star pupil' in private. At the university he excels at chemistry and the sciences. Waldman plans on manipulating Victor and doing away with him if and when Victor could do what he cannot: create life. He eventually undertakes the making of a humanoid creation. Victor is so obsessed with his work that he drives Elizabeth away when she comes to take him away as Ingolstadt is being put into quarantine. Due to the difficulty in replicating the minute parts of the human body, Victor makes the Creature tall, about 8 feet (2.4 m) in height and proportionally large, a 'patch-work doll' of different corpses. Victor already Biblically christens his creation to be named "Adam" after the first man created by God. A subtle God complex itself starts to develop in Victor, soon to be his downfall. As Victor's creation begins to come to life and as the electricity continues to empower him, Waldman attempts to murder Victor and later claim the creature as his 'child', but Victor resists him and kills Waldman with an axe. Victor finally gives his creation life, but soon regrets his decision and tries (unsuccessfully) to kill it wiht the same axe he used on Waldman. The creature is swiftly rejected as an "abortion" and Victor soon flees leaving Adam behind. Victor attempts in a moment of insanity to burn his lab down, but the Creature escapes before then, causing Victor to stop and panic.
Victor uncovers old books owned by Waldman. Many of them dealing with alchemy and unfinished theories about immortality through science. Victor then goes back to the drawing board determined to succeed, ruining his relationship, family life, and all else. Victor is confronted by Elizabeth, and in the ensuing arguement kills her by accident. He then begins to create his "bride", with the operation only to backfire resulting in Elizabeth taking her own life. Breaking from any notion of civility or sanity, Victor flees to Austria, settling in Vienna. He takes Waldman's ideas and theories and improves on them, more determined than ever. Obsessed in wanting to become God....
Adam is played by (barring the picture below, in heavy make-up and prosthetics of course) the great Michael Fassbender
Adam, \"The Monster\"

Fast forward to today.....

The Setting is Modern Day London, England
London, UK

Victor Frankenstein, having applied his own research to extending his own mortality, is now known to the world as Victor Hoffman, wealthy Austrian business magnate.
To the public, Hoffman is a philanthropic millionaire and a beneficiary to mankind. In reality, he has experienced much in the two hundred years that have passed since he created a man from fragments of the corpses of criminals. However, in secret, Helios has become obsessed with overthrowing true humans, which he refers to as \"the Old Race,\" and replacing them with his superior creations. After the failure of his first rebellious monster, he put himself through extensive bodily modifications to extend his life span and increase his physical power (the details are unknown, but it is hinted he used a method similar to that which created the monster, possibly replacing organs from healthy victims over the years). This process has left his physical form scarred and deformed. Helios has acquired wealth and power from selling his knowledge to, among others, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao's communist China. He respected Hitler and was \"greatly grieved\" at the end of World War II.

In modern times, Victor has learned to create genetically-engineered beings devoid of morality, feelings, and pain, unable to deny his command or attack him, focused on his own goals for them while lacking the ability to create or imagine anything beyond this life and their roles. He believes he has given them a perfect existence, but the horror of their protracted but meaningless lives has left many suicidal; a genetically-imprinted proscription prevents them from killing themselves or venting their rage by hurting or killing others, forcing them to find 'loopholes' such as a butler gnawing his own fingers off so that Helios will destroy him as useless. Helios desires to remake the world in the image of Huxley's Brave New World, incapable of acknowledging that his creations are destroying themselves or being driven mad because they cannot cope with the inability to grow beyond their pre-programmed limits and be more than what he wants them to be. Additionally, he is a sexual sadist and a militant atheist, beating Erika to reinforce his own sense of power and violently certain that there is nothing supernatural in the world or anything that he cannot understand. He's extremely arrogant, which has resulted in a degree of carelessness and inability to realize his own failures, continuing to create his creatures with the same programmed beliefs about the nature of existence simply because he believes it, failing to recognize that his creatures 'self-destruct' because of the spiritual void in their existences and dismissing his 'failures' as just mistakes in the equipment.
He is currently being pursued and investigated by MI6 due to Victor's black market connections in Europe (his involvement in weapons distribution is meant to fund his other 'unique' activities)
The lead investigator is William Bell played by Mark Strong
Assisted by his partners agent Collins, played by Freema Agyeman
and agent Spencer, played by Theo James
As for Adam?....
He's back!
We learn that, after his creation, Adam lived alone in the wilderness and found that people were afraid of and hated him due to his appearance, which led him to fear and hide from them. While living in an abandoned structure connected to a cottage, he grew fond of the poor family living there, and discreetly collected firewood for them. Secretly living among the family for months, the Creature learned to speak by listening to them and he taught himself to read after discovering a lost satchel of books in the woods. When he saw his reflection in a pool, he realized his physical appearance was hideous, and it terrified him as it terrifies normal humans. Nevertheless, he approached the family in hopes of becoming their friend. Initially he was able to befriend the blind father figure of the family, but the rest of them were frightened and they all fled their home, resulting in Adam leaving, disappointed. He traveled to Victor's family estate using details from Victor's journal, murdered William, and framed Justine. He fled abroad and gradually became the man he is today, hiding in carnival sideshows and eventually leaving for a Tibetan monastery to find peace. He remained there for several years, befriending a number of the monks, one of whom attempted to reduce the severity of the artificial man's scars by concealing them with intricate tattoos. After learning that Victor is alive, he resurfaces in London. He desires redemption for the murders he committed and believes it is his destiny/duty to kill his creator.

The rest of the film focuses on the modern-day cat and mouse game the two play with each other, with Victor--realizing he's targeted by his first creation--utilizing his wealth and resources, along with an army of pitched-together 'creations' (his "children") to try to eliminate Adam completely. This is a "secret" conflict, although the dead bodies do pile up in the streets of London, which draws attention. A skeptical man not willing to "Believe in Monsters", agent Bell ends up accepting the fact that there is a deed a war of monsters taking place, and forms an uneasy alliance with Adam once confronted with the truth. The film comes to a head when, after dispatching much uglier creations than him, Adam finally confronts Victor. The two square off, revealing Victor's experimentation on himself has granted him increased strength and agility. Victor's heart is ripped out, out of sheer rage and hatred, Adam goes into unnecessary overkill by DECAPITATING Victor! Agent Bell arrives too late to see that blood's already been shed. He doesn't kill Adam, who asks for Bell to grant him one favor since essentially the madness is over: the freedom and choice to simply leave this world. Adam decides to go with his creator, and takes his corpse to the North Pole. It's in this moment Adam finally finds his purpose (bringing Mary Shelly's quote full circle in the film).
The two supposedly disappear into the snow never to be seen Agent Bell, agent Collins and agent Spencer watches from afar on a ship.
Just as they fall into the cold water, a voice can be heard echoing out as the screen fades to black. The voice of Adam saying:
"This is the greatest moment of my life..."
Film ends.

Post-Credits Scene: Ice has fully frozen the ground with little water or puddles in sight. Several boats and ships and personnel surround the sight, a helicopter arriving from the air with the symbol of \Prodigium* written on its left side. As it lands, out steps Dr. Jekyll, who watches as a large block of ice is dug up and pulled from out of the ice with a satisfied yet surprised look on his face.*
He whispers to himself \"I found you\". Inside of it guessed it: Adam, \"The Monster\". But there's no Victor Frankenstein to be found....
*Cut to black\*

\PHEW! Okay Not what you were expecting right? Well that's only because there's only so many ways you can tell a 'horror story' and to me Frankenstein is the least horror centric of all the stories. Franky is a more tragic flawed anti-hero and wanted to capture that here. I always found the concept of Victor-as-the-real-bad-guy interesting so decided to capitalize upon it. Half of the story is gothic period piece and other half is modern-day gritty paranormal thriller. Hopefully that doesn't upset you guys too much! Give me your thoughts!\**
